Report of NSS activities in 2015-16The National Service Scheme was started by Government of India, Ministry of Education and Culture, Govt. of India, in Collaboration with State Government in the year 1969 in 37 selected Universities. Mumbai University has been participating in the scheme right from its inception. At present the scheme is run by the ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports in Central Government and Department of Higher & Technical Education in State Government. At present around 210 colleges of Mumbai University are implementing this scheme through 320 units with the 32000 students strength.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES :
1. Understand the community in which they work.
2. Understand themselves in relation to their community.
3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
4. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
5. Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.
6. Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities.
7. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
8. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
9. Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
10. Practice national integration and social harmony.
We have an effervescent NSS unit which has been established with a rudimentary objective of providing a dais for the interested students to partake in social work during their free time. The report of the activities of the unit for the academic year 2015-16 has been a record of accomplishments and triumphs.
Enrolment drive and Orientation program:
Enrollment drive was conducted in the month of July and enrolled 200 volunteers for the year 2015-16. In order to orient the newcomers an orientation cum training program was organized on31st July, 2015.
Stem cell Donor Registration Camp:
NSS unit in association with the Marrow Donor Registry India (MDRI) organized Stem cell donors Camp in the College on 17th July 2015. 222 stem donor registrations were done which included teaching and non-teaching staff and students from VES college of Arts, Science and Commerce. Students were oriented about Stem cell Donor Registration one day prior to the Camp.
Thalassemia awareness and detection program in the campus:
The NSS unit in association with ROTRACT club of Chembur and Faith foundation conductedThalassemia awareness program in the campus and detection camp in the campus on 22nd July 2015. Mr Vinay Shetty of Faith foundation conducted awareness through intensive class room contact program on 21st July 2016. Blood samples from 375 students were collected and clinical reports with necessary suggestions for further examination of the case were given to the beneficiaries.
Blood donation camps:
The unit organized two blood donation camps and collected 239 bottles of blood in association with Raheja blood bank and Red Cross in the month of 22st July, 2015.
Blood donors club:
Ever since the initiationof the unit we have established a blood donors club in our college to arrange blood on the spot to the needy patients admitted in various hospitals. This year our volunteers could help 12 needy patients in various hospitals.
World peace day:
Nearly 1,500 students, Gandhian workers, peace activists, advocates, journalists and NGOs participated in a peace march to commemorate Hiroshima Day Thursday, August 6. The rally was lead from Azad Maidan to HutatmaChowk around 2.45pm. 15 students from VESASC along with a faculty,Prashant swami participated in this march.
Malaria and dengue awareness:
40 studentsof our College underwent training for ongoing Malaria Awareness Campaigning and conducted rally, skit and survey. It was conducted By Mr. Ashrafi (Pest Control Officer, G/N Ward, MCGM,) from 4th Sep. to 9th Sep. 2015. They gave thorough information regarding causative agent of Malaria i.e. Mosquito consisting of their types, source, life span , preventive measures for decreasing the spread of Mosquito, information regarding symptoms of a Malaria infected person.
Save Girl Child:
As suggested by the University of Mumbai NSS cell, to organize various programmes on the theme “Save Girl Child”. Our NSS college unit has organized various programmes to spread awareness. Following activities were conducted: NSS volunteers sent various quotations on the theme “Save Girl Child” though SMS to their friends and relatives. NSS volunteers had put up the posters on the theme “Save Girl Child” on the Notice Boards to spread awareness. College had organized seminar on “Save Girl Child” to create awareness among the students. The programme was successful it was attended by 87 students. In the programme all the students agreed to send quotation through SMS on the theme “Save Girl Child” to their friends and relative. Our NSS students participated in a intercollegiate street play competition at sathaye college, Vile Parle organized by Anti Dowry Movement, Bombay on 28th November 2015. They were awarded by 3rd Prize.
Energy Saving Project:
As instructed by the University of Mumbai NSS cell, we have established an Energy Conservation cell in our college involving 20 NSS Volunteers as core volunteers. Our Energy Conservation cell was very active throughout the year. As suggested by VC of Mumbai University they imparted training to NSS Volunteers regarding Energy Conservation. The cell had collected Electricity bills of various homes and shops of college students, Volunteers and people of adopted slum pocket to save electricity. The cell had monitor almost 1500 houses and shops.
Note Book Preparation and Distribution:
As per instructions of the University of Mumbai NSS cell, we have established a Note Book Preparation cell in our college involving 72 NSS Volunteers as core volunteers. Our Note Book Preparation cell was very active throughout the year. As suggested by VC of Mumbai University,they prepared 900 Note books from the used books of last year along with NSS Volunteers and Other College Students. They distributed books to poor students on 17th November, 2015 in our adopted slum area,Konkan Nagar and Ashok Nagar.
Road Safety Program:
NSS Volunteers of College conducted various Road safety programs such as Poster Competition, sending SMS, rally and Seminar on road safety to aware citizens of India regarding various safety measures should be adopted while driving the vehicles on the road.
Voting Awareness programme:
VESCollegehad organized Voting Awarenessprogramme to aware the students of college and to impart the knowledge about importance of voting. 22 NSS students participated in spread voting awareness Rally in Chembur camp market place and performed skit near the same area on 23rd January 2016. The skit was performed in the college campus also. On 25th January 2016 we observed the National Voters Day. On this occasion we organized an invited talk by Prof. VinodZalte from P. N. Doshi College. 110 students attended this talk.
AIDS awareness program :
AIDS awareness program in the campus, adopted village and slum area were organized by the unit throughout the academic year. 28 volunteers participated in Aids Awareness rally from Acharya College to Shtabdi Hospital and performed the skit in nearby slum area on 1st December 2015. The volunteers organized an exhibition of AIDS awareness with the materials supplied by Mumbai AIDS Control Society and the materials prepared by the volunteers during our Aids awareness campaign. The exhibition was held in the campus during the college on 22nd and 23rd December 2015. This event was conducted to create awareness about HIV/AIDS its causes as well as to make people know as to how it can be prevented. This rally was also intended in demolishing the various myths that go around in the society about the spreading of this disease. The volunteers carried posters and yelled out slogans in the local languages Hindi and Marathi. The residents of the area had some queries regarding this rally which the volunteers heeded to and cleared all their doubts with patience and understanding. Skit performed by NSS volunteers at the camp site, Thakur Pada and also in College Campus.
Participation in seminars and training programs: Our volunteers also attended Aids awareness seminars and workshops held at various colleges and NGOs. Students participated in various programmes organized by university such as Anti TobaccoAwarness Rally on 1st October, 2015 ,BhajanSandhya on 2nd October, 2015,etc.
National Society for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped (NASEOH) organized a ‘JOB FAIR FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES’. More than 25 companies presented careeropportunities for the blind, physically handicapped, deaf, mute and slow learners.28 NSS volunteers along with 25 other students from VES college helped in the conduct of this event.
One of our NSS PO attended 7-day Orientation Program at ETI, Ahmednagar.
Swacch Bharat Abhiyan:
Pledge was administered at college by students and staff.
Posters were put up on the notice boards and camps to aware students about cleanliness.
Class to class awareness programmes were organised to aware students.
Skit was performed on Swacch bharat abhiyan by NSS Volunteers at Thakur Pada, Ambernath and nearby slum area and also the college campus.
Every day 3 hours devoted by Volunteers on cleanliness by 61 NSS Volunteers at Shibir maidan, Ambernath.
Door to Door campaign conducted by the students in village to aware children about Cleanliness drive at Tara Village.
Organized a talk on biocomposting by Mr. Jayant Joshi, a microbiologist on 2nd September 2015. Mr. Jayant Joshi is working towards spreading awareness about managing waste from source by biocomposting . He has designed a device, using a plastic basket with a mesh within, for house-hold bio-composting purposes and introduced it to our students.
NSS Day Celebration:
NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day .All NSS students of VES college celebrated NSS day by performing skits to create awareness on the topics like status of women in India, blood donation , etc , the students also sang songs of NSS. The videos on different social issues were screened on this day.
Disaster Management: NSS Unit organized a 50 minute talk on Anti-terrorism by anti-terrorism squad members, API Mr.Dhole And API Mr. Sawant ,Vikhroli Police Station on 30th August 2015. It focused on how we, as citizens, can contribute to antiterrorism. They have also screened the videos related to bomb blast. Volunteers also visited to Fire Station at M.I.D.C. Ambernath.
Celebration of Constitution Day:
Unit organized the celebration on the Constitution Day on 26th November 2015, where in Prof. Umesh Chauhan from the Sociology department addressed the students, and educated them with the history and importance of constitution in India. The Programme was attended by 75 students.
Seven Days Residential Camp: NSS Unit of College had organised Seven Days Residential Camp from 31st October, 2015 to 6th November, 2015 at Thakur Pada our adopted Village, near Ambernath. Camp was attended by 61 students and 4 staff members. The Theme of the Camp was “Swacch Bharat Abhiyan”. NSS Volunteers conducted various activities such as skit and debate on the topics “Swacch Bharat Abhiyan”, Save Girl Child, AIDS Awareness etc. Talks were organised for the Volunteers on different topics such as Consumer Awareness, Anti-superstition and moral values, Social networking- Boon or Bane and NSS objectives. The purpose of the camp was to inculcate various values such as social, cultural, moral, educational and ethical.
