  • Academics and Professional Proficiency :
    • Staff Development / Faculty Improvement Programme
      • Dr. Anita Kanwar, Dr. Devidas Gulwade and Mr. Srikant Ghodke attended a one-day workshop on Credit Based Grading System for F.Y.B.Sc. (Physics) at Vaze College on 20th June 2011.
      • Mrs. S. Jayalaksmi attended meeting for credit system at Bandodkar College on 15th June and at Mulund College of Commerce on 20th June 2011.
      • Mrs. Varsha Ahuja, Mrs. Parinita Madan and Mrs. Seema Borgave attended an orientation seminar on the Credit system implementation for FYBSc on 22nd June 2011 at Somaiya College.
      • Ms. Vinaya Jategaonkar and Ms. Shmilona Jain attended a seminar on the “Conduct of FYBSc Credit system” at R.Jhunjhunwala College on 22nd June 2011.
      • Dr. Nagesh Malik, Mrs. Dona Joseph and Mr. Malay Shah Participated in a workshop on “Credit based semester and grading system”for FYBSc Microbiology syllabi” on 24th June 2011 Bhavans College.
      • Mr. Kamlakar Bhopatkar attended a workshop on F.T.B.Sc. Comp. Sc. Credit System Implementation at Ruparel College.
      • Mr. Shrikant D. Ghodke attended a seminar on “Nuclear Energy Facts and Fallacies” on 9th July at R.D. National College.
      • Mrs. S. Jayalakshmi attended a meeting on evaluation rules for FYIT for the new Credit Rating System at Bandodkar college on 7th July 2011.
      • Mrs. Shital Patil attended a workshop on C++ and PL / SQL at Bunds. College on 16th July 2011.
      • Ms. Kanthi Vishwanath attended a half – day workshop on the new Credit and Grading System at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics.
      • Mrs. Varsha Ahuja attended the Cultural Coordinators Meeting at the Dept. of Students Welfare for 44th Intercollegiate cultural competitions (Youth Festival ).
      • Mr. Dyson Chandy attended a worshop on “Revision of Syllabus of SYBA Paper II and III at St. Andrews College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized by the BOS in Sociology, University of Mumbai.
      • Ms. Dona Joseph, Mr. Malay Shah and Ms. Shmilona Jain attended a talk by Dr. A.M. Chakraborty, an eminent scientist from Illinois University, U.S. at K.J. Somaiya College on 25th August 2011 on “Eradicationg Cancer in our lifetime”. A group of M.Sc.(Part II) students also attended this talk.
      • Dr. Nagesh Malik attended a National Conference sponsored by DST and organized by V.E.S. College of Pharmacy on C- CADD on 16th and 17th September 2011.
      • Dr. S. Nagpurkar attended the First Term Training Progamme for Extension on 20th September 2011 at the Vidyapeeth Vidyarthi Bhavan, Churchgate, Mumbai.
      • Mr. Kamlakar Bhopatkar attended a workshop on “SciLab” on 22nd September 2011 at the department of Computer Science, University of Mumbai. The workshop was conducted in association with IIT – Bombay.
      • Dr. Suniti Nagpurkar attended a one-day workshop organized by BCUD and University of Mumbai for developing e-learning resources for distance learning at undergraduate level at the Convention Hall in the University.
      • Dr. Sarla Rathi attended a DAE – BRNS Workshop on Hadron Physics at BA.R.C., Mumbai from 31st October to 4th November 2011.
      • Dr. Sarla Rathi attended an I C T S conference on “Advances in Nuclear Physics” at Goa from 7th to 8th November 2011.
      • Mr. Atul Mody participated in a one-day seminar on “Research Avenues and challenges in Higher Education” organized by the University of Mumbai at the Pherozshah Mehta Bhavan on 18th November 2011.
      • Dr. Nagesh Malik attended a NAAC sponsored seminar on Quality and Excellence in Higher Education” on 18th and 19th November at Karmveer Bhaurao Patil College, Vashi.
      • Mrs. Dona Joseph attended a “National Seminar for undergraduate Biology Teachers” that was jointly organized by IISER and Garware College, Pune . The objective of the workshop was to transform biology education at the B.Sc. level by improving classroom teaching and learning.
      •  Ms. Vinaya Jategaonkar and Ms. Shmilona Jain attended a workshop on 13th January 2012 at Mithibai College, Vile Parle.
      •  Dr. Leela Jain and Dr. Mary Stephen attended the Executive Council Meeting of Indian Chemical Society at SIES college on 28th January 2012 and received the consent to host the 25th Research Scholars Meet in our College in the third week of February 2013.
      • Ms. Akanksha Mhatre and Ms. Meghna Palaskar from T.Y.B.Sc won the First and Second Prize in the Essay writing competition (English and Hindi) on “Swami Vivekanand’s Contribution towards Youth Empowerment” that was organized by Hashu Advani Memorial Foundation in January. They received cash prize of Rs. 5000/- and 3000/- respectively.
      • Dr. Nagesh Malik attended a one day national level seminar that was organized by the department of Biophysics and Biotechnology, University of Mumbai on the occasion of national science day on 28th February.
      • Mr. Suman Ganger attended a workshop on “Gene Expression, Protein Purification and Structural Analysis” at SIES college from 27th to 29th February 2012.
      • Dr. V. D. Barhate and Dr. Mary Stephen attended the 24th Research Scholars Meet organized by Indian Chemical Society at SIES College on 17th and 18th February as observers.
      • Mr. Kamlakar Bhopatkar attended an orientation course at the University of Mumbai from 6th February to 6th March.
      • Ms. Hema Varadarajan attended and participated in the UGC sponsored short term course on “Workshop on e-content development and set up and usage of virtual classroom” that was organized by the academic staff College, University of Mumbai from 14th to 17th March 2012.
    • Our staff members invited as resource persons elsewhere
      • Dr. Suniti Nagpurkar was invited as a resource person on 5th May 2011 at a Refresher Course for the “In House Promottees” _ the Junior College Teachers of Kendriya Vidylayas at Kendriya Vidyalaya Bandup.
      • Over this month, the S. Y. and T. Y. students presented their book reviews prepared by them on selected books during the vacation of academic year 2011 – 12.
      • Mr. Atul K. Mody Conducted sessions on “Motivational Bridge Course” for B.Sc. (Physics) students at Deogiri College, Aurangabad that was organized by IAPT (Indian Association of Physics Teachers) with the support of IAS (Indian Academy of Science), Banglore and INSA, Allahabad from 16th to 18th June 2011.
      • Mrs. S. Jayalakshmi was invited as a resource person for “Modern Operating Systems at the workshop for Revised SYIT syllabus in Walia College, Andheri on 12th July 2011.
      • Mr. Atul Mody attended the Maharashtra Board Physics Class XII Text book review committee meeting on 7th September 2011.
    • Paper / Poster presentations at seminars
      • A research proposal for M.Sc. by Research titled “Study of Available Micronutrient Status of soil in Different Regions of India” was submitted by Ms. Heena A. Magodia under the guidance of Dr. V.D. Barhate. This proposal has been approved by the University of Mumbai for the academic year 2011 -12.
      • Ms. Mahalakshmi Sanker presented a paper at a seminar on “Changing Business Practices in the Current Scenario” at SIES College of management, Nerul, her paper on “Social Advertising and its Effect” was adjudged as one of the three best papers in the “General Management Category on 27th August 2011.
      • A research paper titled “Survey of Parallel Data Processing in context with Map Reduce” was presented at the AIAA 2011 International Conference organized from 23rd to 25th September at Tirunelveli. This paper was published in Academy and Research Collaboration Centre (AIRCC) Volume 1, Number 3 with ISBN 978-1-921987-01-4-2011.
      • Mr. Anand Gupta , a research student of Dr. V. D. Barhate presented a research paper titled “Extractive Spectrophotometric Method for Determination of Rhodium (III) using N- ( O-hydroxy benzylidene ) pyridine -2 amine as an analytical reagent” at a National Conference organized by International Society of Science and Technology at Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari. This paper was published in the International Journal of Chemtech Research, 4(I) , 45-40 (2012) with Mr. Anand Gupta and Dr. V. D. Barhate as authors.
      • Mrs. Majurika Das and Mrs. V.B. Murthy presented a paper on “Cooperative Learning to create an effective classroom and the role of a teacher” in a UGC sponsored national seminar at Tolani College of Commerce.
      • Mrs.Jayalakshmi, coordinator of the Department, attended the refresher course at university of Mumbai from 2nd January to 23 January. The theme of the course was “ICT for inclusive development and sustainable growth”.
      • Mrs. Mahalashmi Sankar along with Dr. Suniti Nagpurkar, and Ms. Gayathri Balasubramanian, presented a paper at the platinum Jubilee conference on “Globalisation and Social Transformation: The Indian Experience” held at TISS from February 17-19, 2012. The paper was titled “Changing Role of Women Under Urban Setting”
      • Prof. Mahalakshmi Sankar along with Prof. Shweta Gandhi attended and presented a paper titled, “Business success and customer relations” in the national conference on Economic Environment & Business Sustenance, organized by Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Management studies and research on February 24 -25, 2012.
    • Research
      • Under the guidance of Dr. V.D. Barhate two PhD students (Mr. Y.S.L. Narasimham and Mr. Arun D. Kamble and one M.Sc. by research student (Ms. Priya Desothalee) have submitted their thesis in 2011-12..
      • Mr. Laxmi Narashimham, a research student of Dr. V.D. Barhate has been awarded the Ph.D degree in Analytical Chemistry in 2011-12.
      • Dr. (Mrs.) Anita Kanwar was granted a ‘Major Research grant’ of Rs. 11.42 Lakhs from U.G.C. in the year 2011-12.
    • Publication by staff members
      • Dr. Nagesh Malik et. al. published a paper titled “Mass Scale Cultivation of entomopathogenic fungus Nomuraea rileyi using agricultural products and agro wastes in the Journal of Biopesticides 4(2) : 176-179 (2011). The paper was accepted on October 20, 2011 and published in November.
      • Mrs. Jayalakshmi co-authored the following books on publications in October- November 2011-
      • “Modern Operating System” for S.Y.B.Sc. (I.T.) students, published by Vipul Prakashan .
      •  Third Revised Edition of “Customer Relationship Management for T.Y.I.T.. and M.Sc. students, published by Vipul Prakashan
      • Mrs. Parineeta Madan attended a P.G. lecture series on “Stereo Chemistry and Spectrosscopy by Prof. P. G. Kalsi on 17th, 18th and 19th October at Khalsa College.
      • Dr. V. D. Barhate has a published a research paper titled “Development of Extractive Spectrophotometric Determination of Copper II using N- (O-hydroxy benzylidene) Pyridine – 2 amine” in the Journal of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research.
    • Academic Achievements and Performance of students
      • Miss Surya Resavan from T.Y.I.T. secured the second position in the University of Mumbai examination in 2011. She was felicitated by the University on 19th November 2011. The co-ordinator Mrs. S Jayalakshmi attended the same.
    • Life Long Learning and Extension :
      • Dr. S. Nagpurkar organized an orientation programme for the students who have enrolled for the programme of department of Life Long Learning and Extension, University of Mumbai. This is the first year that the college has enrolled under this programme. A talk was also given by Prof. C. Chakradeo from the College of Comprehensive Education, Chembur, on 25th November 2011. Dr. Nagpurkar alongwith two T.Y.B.A. students also attended a Training programme-cum-workshop organized by the Dept. of Life Long Learning and Extension on 5th December 2011.

      • Dr. V. D. Barhate has been nominated for “Bharat Shiksha Ratna” by the Global Society for Health and Educational Growth, New Delhi.
  • Sports / Co-Curricular / Extra – Curricular achievements of students
    • University Level
      • 10th and 16th August 2011 : The students of our College won the following prizes at the 44th Inter Collegiate Cultural competitions (Youth Festival ) Organized by the University of Mumbai at the Zonal Round held on 10th August 2011 and 16th August 2011.

      • 22nd August 2011 : The intercollegiate Badminton Tournament was organized by the University of Mumbai at University Sports Pavilion, Marine Lines, Mumbai-400020 from 22nd August 2011. Our men’s team qualified for the quarter final round and was amongst the top 8 teams out of the 128 teams which participated in the tournament. The team members were Mr. Somnath Sonawane from T.Y.B.Com (Captain), Mr. Suraj Lalwani from T.Y.B.Com and Mr. Raghvendaran from S.Y.B.M.M.
      • Mr. Ashish Ghunge from S.Y.B.M.M. won the Ist Prize at the University level photography Competition on 15th September 2011.
      • Mr. Amal from T.Y.B.M.S and Mr. Varun and Mr. Ronak from S.Y. B.Sc received the Third Prize in the G.K. Quiz Competition conducted by the Youth Festival of Mumbai University for 2011-12.
    • Inter – collegiate Level (Some Prominent Prizes)
      • 5th June 2011 : Four students from the Microbiology and Biotechnology department were awarded the Second Prize in the environmental project category of the Shrushti Mitra Awards instituted by the Department of Environment, Government of Maharashtra on 5th June 2011 on the eve of the World Environment Day. Mr. Prithviraj Chavan presided over the ceremony. The proud achievers of this honour were Mr. Virocha Chavan, Mr. Ronak Patel, Mr. Vivek Parab and Mr. J. Chandashekar. The topic of their project was “Waste management in college laboratories”.
      • 27th to 29th July : An Inter-collegiate Carrom Tournament was organized by “Shree Narayana Guru College of Commerce” at P.L. Lokhande Marg, Chembur, Mumbai. under the banner of an inter-collegiate fest called “OASIS” from 27th to 29th July 2011. Mr. Mahesh Godse (T.Y.B.Com.) and Mr. Chandan Badekar (F.Y.B.A.) represented our college for the competition. Mr. Mahesh Godse secured the 2nd position in the carrom tournament.
      • 27th August 2011 : A group of 10 students won the II Prize in a “Chem-Skit Competition” at S.I.E.S. college of Arts, Science and Commerce, Sion. The skit was on “Wonders of Chemistry”.
      • Mr. Aditya Jadhav and Ms. Seema Choudhary from S.Y.B.M.M. won the III prize at the Asia Summit, a competition organized by Ruia College on 13th September 2011.
      • Mr. Vimal Attri from S.Y.B.Sc. and Mr. Ashish Mishra from T.Y.B.Sc. won the IInd and Consolation Prizes respectively at the Chemistry Aptitude Test organized by Ratnam College on 20th September 2011
      • At a national level seminar on “I C T and its challenge for the future of India” Ms. Mrunali Parab and Mr. Anup Sharma won a cash prize and certificate for their paper on the topic “Application of AI in Robotics and its opportunities in India ; Research in B.A.R.C.”. The event was organized by Jai Hind College on 22nd November 2011.
      • The F.Y. and S.Y.B.Sc. (Biotech) students participated in Biotech 2011, an intercollegiate biotech event conducted by Tilak College Vashi on 26th November 2011. Here, they won the “Best College” Trophy,
      • Nine Students who came in the merit list of the Chemistry Aptitude Test of the Indian Chemical Society were awarded cash prizes and Certificates at S.I.E.S. College on 28th January 2012.
      • IIM Banglore organized “United Minds” an on-line business simulation competition at the national level. Our team from T.Y.B.Com (Financial Markets) was selected to represent the West Zone – I at the national round of this competition on 17th March 2012 at IIM – B campus . They stood 33 on an All- India Level and were awarded gold level certificates. They were also made members of the charter, “Indias Best Young Minds-2011-12”.
  • Mega Events of the Year
      • The department of microbiology organized a one-week workshop and hands on training in Bioinformatics titled “Fundamentals of Bioinformatics and Introduction to In-silico Drug Design” from 6th to 11th June for its T.Y.B.Sc. Microbiology students.
      • The department of biotechnology organized its 5th annual intercollegiate biotech festival “Bioeffervescence” on 27th August 2011 that comprised both academic and co-curricular events like Skit, Culture, Designing, Biohousie and Pseudohunt. About 200 students from 13 Mumbai Colleges participated with K.B.P. College, Vashi bagging the Best College trophy. This year’s theme was “Environment Conservation” with a motto of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recharge”. The event was organized by S.Y.B.Sc. (Biotech) students. The day also witnessed the release of the Biotechnology departmental in-house magazine “Bioeffervescence 2011”.
      • The department of Microbiology in collaboration with BARC organized a BARC national seminar on “Nuclear Technology for Food, Water, Energy and Health” on 5th August 2011. Dr. R. K. Singh delivered the key note address and Dr. (Mrs.) J.K. Phadnis made the presidential address. Dr. M.T. Kamble, Dr. V. D. Puranik, Dr. A.S. Pente, Dr. S. T. Panicker and Mr. M. Ramnamurthi spoke on key areas of the seminar.
      • The department of BMM organized its annual cultural festival “Raaga 2011. Raga is an initiative of the department to preserve and nourish the great culture of our country.
      • The departments of I. T. and C. S. presented their annual intercollegiate event, “sagacity 2011” on 9th and 10th September 2011 in which more than 2000 students participated. The theme was “Anti-Corruption – Drain not the ignorance”. Technical events included debugging, write a programme, robotics etc. Non-technical events included Bluffmaster, debate, power point presentation mock trade & quiz. The award for best college went to V.J.T.I. college.
      • “Chem Talentia 2011” the intercollegiate festival of the department of Chemistry was held on 13th September 2011. 25 groups participated in the poster presentation competition and 13 took part in the seminar competition. Dr. V. K. Jain from B. A. R. C. and Dr. Alka Kolhadkar from Vaze college were the external judges.
      • The department of B. M. M. organized the Social Awareness Week ( SAW ) from 19th to 24th September 2011 in our college. The themes were right to education, child labour, global warming, anti-corruption, anti-terrorism and women empowerment. This initiative was aimed at generating awareness among the students on these issues.
      • “INPSYGHT”, the Psychology Association organized a talk on “Role of the School Counselor” by Ms.Upasna Sarai, H.R. Manager, BCG Schools. Students from other colleges were also invited to attend the programme.
      • The department of Physics organized a U.G.C. sponsored two days State level Conference titled ” Frontiers in Material Science” on 25th and 26th November 2011.
      • The department of Mathematics organized a day long conference, “Mathemight ’06”, on the theme “Surprises in Mathematics and their application”. The conference began with a key note address by Prof. Sivarama Krishnan. This was followed by a paper presentation competition, Poster competition, Treasure-hunt and a Maths Quiz competition. About 142 students from various Mumbai colleges participated.
      • The department of Banking and Insurance organized its annual festival “Euphonity” on 14th January 2012. The theme of this year’s festival was “White India, Black India”. The prominent events were power point presentation, Debate, Quiz, Try and Rectify.
      • The department of economics organized an “Intercollegiate Power Point Presentation Competition on current Socio-ecomomic issues”. The First Prize was won by a three member team from S.I.E.S. College of Commerce and Economics who presented on the theme of “Indias’ Demography: Issues and challenges”.
  • Career Guidance and Placement (Some activities)
    The department of Computer Science conducted a number of career placement activities during the months of March and April 2011:

      • 5 students got selected in the L and T placement at R. J. College on 3rd March 2011.
      • 4 students got selected at the joint campus placement drive at Thakur College on 16th and 17th of April 2011.
      • Some of our students joined a campus Recruitment Training Programme conducted by SEED InfoTech Ltd. after attending a seminar for the same on 20th April 2011. This programme included an aptitude and technical test, group discussion, technical and HR rounds.
      • May 2011 also saw the career and placement cell of CS and IT department busy with many activities:
      • TY students conducted some Dot Net sessions for SYCS students to introduce them to these Programming languages. The TY students also conducted personality development sessions for SYCS students.
      • SY students conducted brush-up sessions for FYCS students to improve their programming and logical skills. They also conducted sessions on Flash and Photoshop.
      • Mr. Ganesh Gajare, working with Mr. Nagarjuna of HBCSE, introduced the concept of Free Software Foundation (FSF), GNU and Linux OS. Some students, after a month long training course at HBCSE, were rewarded when one of their projects got selected for the GNU organization. It would be sent to Berlin. This achievement was appreciated by the department as well as Principal.
      • A presentation on “Careers after B.Sc Physics” was made by 2007 batch of T.Y.B.Sc. students. After the presentation the ex-students interacted with our current students on 2nd July 2011.
      • On 27th August 2011 Ms. Sneha Hariharan, an ex-student who is currently pursuing her MBA from D.Y. Patil college took a session for SYCS students for personality development and building self-confidence. This session was conducted mainly to get rid of their fear of speaking in public by developing their communication skills. She also focused on GDs and setting goals. Â
      • Geebee conducted a session with TYCS students on 16th of August 2011 to guide them with further studies in foreign University.
      • The University Department of Computer Science, University Department of Information Technology and Thakur college of Engineering organized a campus recruitment drive for Works Applications: a Japan based reputed company in ERP products. The current TY students with good academic records were eligible and had attended the session on 23rd of August 2011  in two places i.e. University of Mumbai, Kalina and Thakur College , Kandivali according to their preference. The students were introduced to the company and their products.
      • A seminar was conducted by “Anamika English Academy” on “Soft Skills” on 27th September 2011 in our college
      • The T. Y. I. T. students attended a campus recruitment drive organized by works Applications, a reputed Japan based company in E.R.P. products on 23rd September 2011 at two places University of Mumbai (Kalina), and Thakur College (Kandivali).
      • Wipro placement for all students were organized on 5th October 2011. Here 17 students got selected under the WASE programme and 9 students under WISTA programme.
      • Two students were selected by CMC for training-cum-placement in the field of software programming.
      • Mrs. Hema Varadarajan organized a seminar by Edwise International, an overseas education consultancy firm, on careers and studies in bio medical sciences. This consultancy firm has a tie up with 450 universities abroad. They addressed the students of Microbiology and Biotechnology streams and updated then about careers and studies in biomedical sciences.
      • Mr. Nuruddin Uchwaniwala, Ms. Anita Iyer and Ms. Anushka Jain, alumni of MSc. Microbiology (2008 batch), briefed the B.Sc students about the Ph.d. prgrammes in the United States.
      • The second and third seminar from a series of seminars by seed Info Tech were conducted on “Communication Skills” and “Professional Grooming” for S.Y.B.Sc (CS) on 14th and 28th of January, respectively.
      • At a Wipro Placement Camp on 11th January 2012 in Bunts and Shetty College, Kurla (E), 10 of our students got selected. At L and T Placements on 3rd February 2012 in Thakur College, 3 of our students got selected. Also 6 of our students got selected by Patni Computers.
      • At L and T Placements in Thakur College, Kandivali on 3rd February 2012, nine of our College students got selected. At a second placement round of L and T at R. J. College, Ghatkopar another 3 students got selected.
      • I Gate Patni conducted a recruitment drive in the University of Mumbai in which five of our students got selected.
      • “Job Skills” conducted an aptitude and psychometric test for TYIT students on 9th March 2012. The result of the psychometric test will help them analyse their skills.
      • Seed conducted an aptitude test at YMT College Kharghar in which two of our students got selected for the free training of MBA CET.
      • Ten students were placed in Wipro, three in L & T and six in Patni during this period.
  • NSS Activities
      • The N.S.S. unit of the college organized a seven days special residential camp at Yusuf Meherally Centre, Tara, Panvel from 16th to 22nd November 2011. It was attended by 41 N.S.S. Volunteers, two N.S.S. Programme Officers and one peon.
      • The N.S.S. unit of the college in collaboration with MDACS organized a skit on AIDS Awareness in the college campus on 29th November 2011.
  • Outreach Cell
  • VESLARC
      • 35 students from SY, TY and M. Sc Part II and two staff members ( Ms. Hema Varadarajan and Dr. N. N. Malik) attended a workshop organized by VESLARC on “Speak Right, Write Right” on 22nd July 2011. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Villie Daruwala, a Corporate trainer.
