About the Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is committed to academic excellence, innovation in teaching and holistic student development. Our programs are designed to cater to the diverse academic needs of students across the Science, Commerce and Arts faculties.

  1. Innovative & Inclusive Teaching: We tailor our teaching methods to suit the size, stream and specific learning needs of each class. Whether you’re a Science major or a Commerce or Arts student, our approach ensures clarity, engagement and application-oriented learning.
  2. Unique Minor Programs:
  • Mathematics Minor (Science & Commerce): We offer a comprehensive Mathematics Minor for students in both Science and Commerce streams.
  • Exclusive Commerce Minor: Our “Mathematics and Computer Systems” Minor, available for Commerce students, is truly one of a kind. It blends essential concepts of Business Mathematics and Statistics with practical, hands-on training in MS Excel. Notably, ours is the only college under Mumbai University to offer this unique NEP-compliant program.
  • Exclusive Science Minor: Our Mathematics Minor for B.Sc. students spans 5 semesters (starting in Semester II) and includes:
      1. Discrete Mathematics
      2. Linear Algebra I & II
      3. Calculus I & II

These courses build a strong mathematical base, preparing students for advanced studies in their Major subjects or careers in applied fields like Data Science.

3. Empowering Commerce Students: We recognize the foundational role of mathematics in the Bachelor of Commerce program. To that end, the department offers:

  • Vocational Skill Courses (VSC) in FYBCom: Basic Quantitative Math I & II reinforce essential math skills in FYBCom
  • Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) in FYBCom and VSC in TYBCom: This track includes training geared towards competitive exams, in an attempt to develop students’ reasoning skills. Often, it is seen that Commerce students enroll in external institutes to prepare for Competitive Exams; these courses equip students for success beyond the classroom with the SEC courses.
  • Mathematics is often seen as preparation for competitive exams in India. With both these tracks for BCom students, we seek to strike a balance between inculcating mathematical thinking, building a solid mathematical foundation, as well as helping students’ develop reasoning skills.
  • As we split these courses into smaller components, it also helps manage the mathematics anxiety, avoidance behaviour and cognitive load often associated with mathematics amongst commerce students.

4. Strong Statistical Foundation for Science Students: A dedicated Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) track spans over 3 semesters focuses on developing statistical thinking and reasoning skills in Science graduates across disciplines. The courses include data visualization and representation methods, descriptive and inferential statistics.

5. Enabling Arts Students: Recognising the need for Arts students to be tech-savvy, we offer two Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) courses in MS-Excel and computer basics to FYBA students.

6. Personalized Support & Enrichment: The department conducts tutorial Sessions in Small Batches: These include:

    1. Student presentations
    2. Problem-solving workshops
    3. Remedial classes for those needing extra help

7. Bridge Program: The department offers tailored support for F.Y.B.Sc. Biotechnology students in the form of a Bridge course in Mathematics to ensure a smooth academic transition.

8. Intercollegiate Exposure: Students are encouraged to participate in various competitions to hone their skills and build confidence.

9. Mathematics Lab: Our department proudly houses a fully-equipped Mathematics Lab, providing students with the tools and environment to deeply explore, visualize, and understand mathematical concepts.
