- The curriculum is delivered using experiential methods of learning as much as possible, e.g., role-plays, student presentations, small group discussions, movie screenings, peer-to-peer learning etc. that helps students develop a better understanding of what they learn.
- They are encouraged to do reference work; especially those who show a lot of promise and capability, making them go beyond the prescriptions of the syllabus.
- With every batch of third year students, we have an e-group formed, which is then used for exchanging and sharing of information/ notes, information from web pages and presentations that are made.
BRIDGE COURSE:
A 5 day course on ‘Statistics for psychology’ was organised by the department from 13th July to 17th July, 2015 for a total of 25 hours. Prof. Aankeet Gokkalgandhi of the department conducted the course which was attended by 26 students from various colleges based in Mumbai. These were students who were aspiring to take up M.A. in Psychology and were keen to learn statistical reasoning as applied to research. The aim of this course was to bridge the gap between B.A. and M.A. in terms of knowledge of probability and statistics, and to foster research oriented thinking in the students.

Year 2017-2018
4th July 2017 : Talk On ‘Behavioral economics’ by Dr.Vivek Belhekar, Department of Applied Psychology, University of Mumbai was held on 4th July 2017, Tuesday. It was attended by more than 40 students from Psychology,Sociology, and BFM departments. The talk included topics such as the Pareto Principle, Framing effect, Dictator Game, Ultimatum Game, Fairness and trust etc. It gave useful insights to the students and teachers alike.

1st August 2017 : Go Green Activity: As part of the college pledge to Go Green, the department of psychology has taken an initiative to collect used Tetrapak Cartons and submit them for recycling to Sahakari Bhandar.
- Student development activity
- Inter-class (FY, SY, and TY) activities are held to get students acquainted with each other so that they develop a sense of belongingness with the department.
- Students are encouraged to participate in inter-collegiate competitions, attend seminars and workshops that are organized by different colleges from time to time.
- In addition to attending such programs in other colleges, students are encouraged to organize such events in the department. This exercise allows them to hone up their organizing skills. Recently the department organized two inter-collegiate seminars, where students from different colleges could present research work done by them.
- One study/field visit to Mental Hospital is undertaken for the third year students during the term. This helps them to understand the issues of institutionalization and mental health.
- Remedial sessions are held with students who find it difficult to cope with the subject. In this aspect, at times peer-to-peer interactions learning methods are used.
- Students are encouraged to present their own research papers under the guidance of the faculty in seminars and conferences.
- Visit to NGOs to develop the sense of community service

Students Achievements for Psychology Dept
- A paper presented by students of MA Psychology Semester II- Sara Chavan, Suyash Karangutkar and Priya Kewalramani, titled “The Opinion Divide on Israel Palestine conflict- a qualitative analysis”, under the guidance of Aankeet Gokkalgandhi, won the first prize in a national level virtual research competition organised by BMN College of Home Science, Mumbai on 11th June 2021.
- Three students of MA Psychology part ii, Anuja Tilak, Kadambari Shahane and Shivani Chaware, won the first prize for the research paper titled “Exploring the relationship between perceived vulnerability to disease and indicators of conformity”, in the research conference named “Pandemic Turn” organized by Vaze College,Mulund. The paper was done under the guidance of Aankeet Gokkalgandhi.
- Shweta Nikalje (SYBA), Prerna Talreja (SYBA) & Godwin Ramrajkar (FYBA) bagged 2nd Prize for their paper presentation titled “To study the level of awareness and incidents of ‘Eve Teasing’ among college girls” at Trishool – Psychology Research Convention for Undergraduate Students on ‘Issue Related to Women’, held at Smt. P.N.Doshi Women’s College, Ghatkopar Mumbai on 26th February, 2014.
- Ms. Shweta Nikalje (TYBA) was among the top 10 Best Student in the academic year 2014-15.
- Shweta Manghnani (SYBA), Deepali Thakkar (SYBA) & Aasiya Almas (SYBA) bagged 3rd Prize for their paper presentation titled “An experimental study to understand the extent of bystander effect as a function of number of people present” at Trishool – Psychology Research Convention for Undergraduate Students on ‘Pro-social behavior’, held at Smt. P.N.Doshi Women’s College, Ghatkopar Mumbai on, 8th January, 2016.
- Saurabh Nigam (TYBA) won the 2nd Prize in Psych Sabha at PsycInsight 2016, an inter-collegiate psychology fest held at Jai Hind College, Mumbai on 22nd July, 2016.
- Ms. Gomathy Iyer (MA-II) & Ms Adishta Bharadwaj (SYBA),bagged the 1st and 2nd Prizes in Verbal & Ms. Payal Kalyandasani (TYBA) won 1st Position in Non-Verbal categories of the Event “Expressions” – The Ideal Victim held on 13th August, 2016 in VESASC College.organized by the WDC of the college.
- Vaibhav Bokade’s (TYBA) ACP research paper titled ‘CONFORMITY- The Effect of Other’s Judgments on an Individual’s Behavior won the 1st Prize in ACP poster presentation held on 9th July, 2016.
- Mr. Chinmaya and Miss Supriya from T.Y. B.A. (Psychology) won the First Prize at an intercollegiate seminar presentation on Carl Rogers at M.D. Shah Mahila college, Mumbai on 6th February 2010.
- One team from S.Y.B.A. (Psychology) won the First Prize at an intercollegiate seminar competition on “Stress and Adolescence” at P.N. Doshi college, Mumbai on 9th February 2010.
- Results
- As far as the TY results are concerned, the department has consistently achieved a 100% passing percentage, with almost 50% of the students passing in first division.
- Approximately 10% of them pursue higher studies at university level and some of them go for higher education at foreign universities.
- Several of our past-years students’ are working in the fields of management, training and development, special education and teaching or have a private practice as a psychologist.

- The department has always encouraged students to gain experience in different aspects of life, which gives them a glimpse of the “real social world”.

The Department of Chemistry is a proud recipient of the DST-FIST (Department of Science and Technology Funding for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure) grant and Department of Biotechnology (DBT) – STAR College grant from A.Y. 2016-17
Chemistry is an incredibly fascinating field of study. It plays an important role in everyone’s life and touches almost every aspect of our existence in some way. - Innovative Teaching Methods
Teachers employ varied teaching methods including seminars by students, videos, animations, skits, games, group discussions, Program oriented guided interactive learning (POGIL) and quiz, besides lectures for curriculum transaction. Workshops are also conducted to give students a better understanding of new subjects like Bioinformatics.
- Overall Student development
The department conducts a variety of programs under the banner of the ‘Microbiology-Biotechnology Association’ to develop employable as well as soft skills of students. These activities include subject-based competitions (poster-making, model making, debates, seminar presentations and essay writing), movie shows, guest lectures by scientists, etc. Prizes are awarded to students who excel in academics as well as in co-curricular activities. The freshers are welcomed every year with a humorous skit based on Microbiology. Educational visits to research institutes and industries are conducted for the S.Y.B.Sc., T.Y.B.Sc and M.Sc. students. The students are also encouraged to undertake internships at research institutes, industries, pathological laboratories during their vacations. Some of our past students have undergone training at BARC, TIFR, KEM Hospital etc.
- Well-equipped laboratories
The department has one UG and 3 PG labs (M.Sc. by papers, M.Sc. by research and Ph.D.), 2 clean rooms with laminar airflow units and a preparation room. Besides the basic equipment, the lab is well-equipped with research equipments including a U.V. spectrophotometer, 5 L lab fermenter, cooling centrifuge, rotary vacuum evaporator, tensiometer and more
- Departmental library
The department has a regularly updated library with more than 500 books covering various topics in Microbiology. It serves as an additional rich learning resource for the students. We are proud to have strongly bonded alumni who generously donate books to the department library.
- Research
Staff members of the department regularly apply to UGC and University of Mumbai for research projects funding. Since the inception of M.Sc. by Research in 2004, 4 students have completed their M.Sc. by Research in Microbiology. Currently 3 students are pursuing M.Sc. by Research in Microbiology and are working on various research projects. In addition to this, the staff members also guide the M. Sc. (by papers) students in their dissertation projects.
Promotion of Undergraduate Research is one of the important highlights of the department, where B. Sc. students interested in pursuing short projects are allowed to explore and perform the experiments under the guidance of the staff members. These students are motivated to participate in various academic conferences and research conventions like ‘Avishkar – Mumbai University Research Meet Convention’ and ‘Jigyaasa – K. C. College Research Scholar Meet’ , Sajjan Gupta Memorial Awards by Konark Group etc.
- Results
Our students have been consistently performing well at the University examinations in spite of the low cut-off percentage at F.Y level. We have a pass percentage of nearly 100% at the B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels. On an average, 50% of our students secure a first class. We have had several University top rankers among our B.Sc. students, while at the M.Sc. level we have University rankers almost every year.
- Alumni
The first batch of T. Y. B.Sc. Microbiology graduated in 1981. The Department is proud of its alumni and their achievements. We have an active alumni association with registered members. Several of our alumni work in internationally reputed institutes such as Harvard Medical School, Washington University School of Medicine, John Hopkins School of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, Ludwig’s Maximillian University, Germany, and occupy important positions in industries such as Abbott Molecular, US Children’s Hospital, Boston, Syngene International ltd, Bangalore, Biocon, Bio-analytical Technologies India Pvt, Ltd. They help our current students through guest lectures, counselling sessions and provision of information about job openings.
- Career guidance and Placements:
We counsel our students on their career choices and bring job openings and vacancies to their notice by regular display of advertisements on the notice boards, emails and through personal contacts. We also help in their placements through our alumni network and contacts in industries.
- Extension activities
The students are actively involved in the Lifelong Learning and Extension activity of the University of Mumbai. The aim of this program is community awareness and making the students understand their social responsibilities. This activity ensures a holistic development of the students. The activities taken up by our students include, Status of Women in the society (SWS), Career project (CP) and Population Education Club (PEC). Our students enthusiastically participate in the activities of the Outreach Cell of the college, such as fund collection drives for NASEOH, working for NGOs and visits to social welfare centers

The Department of Microbiology believes in the holistic development of its students and staff. Keeping this motto in mind, the department collaborates with many regional and national organizations to provide a broader view of the society to its stakeholders. Many activities are planned in collaborations round the year. Department caters to Science students as well as Commerce students. Therefore diverse teaching methods are adopted depending on the need and size of the class. - Regular tutorial classes held in smaller batches for Science as well as Commerce students

Activities of Accountancy Association:
- “Know your Tax Obligation” – a One Day Camp for filing Income Tax Return (ITRI) was organised by Accountancy Association on 25th July, 2015.
- “Talk on Technical Analysis” – CA. Vivek Patil, India’s foremost expert in Elliot Wave Analysis, delivered the talk on Investment in Shares on 9th January, 2016
- The functioning of stock exchanges were brought to the notice of our students through “Mock-Stock”. Students were given an opportunity to experience themselves how the prices of shares move up and down on the basis of demand, supply or related news. Only third year commerce students were allowed to participate. About 70 students took part and were trained by the eminent professional trainers of Bombay Stock Exchange.
- Organized a visit to BSE only for Third Year B.Com Students. On the day of visit even though it was raining badly, about 70 students along with Prof. Sunita Sherifani and Prof. Kishore Dichwalkar went right from Chembur/Kurla to Bombay Stock Exchange Building, Fort.

Activities
Organised a guest lecture on “Siachen Glacier and Global Warming: An Environmental Perspective” for F.Y.B.COM Students on the 9th of January 2016. Capt.(Retd.) Amey Deshmukh who had first-hand experience of serving at Siachen Post delivered a the lecture. The objective was understanding the environmental implications of global warming on the glaciers and over earth environment and to sensitize the students about harsh climate and difficulties faced by Indian Army.
Organised a Nature Trail to Maharashtra Nature Park for F.Y.B.Com students. The objective was understanding Forest Ecosystem, acquiring knowledge of organic composting and biodiversity about 10 students participated in the trail they were accompanied by EVS faculty Prof. Minal Parab.
Poster making Competition for F. Y. BCOM Students. Prof. Shikha Datta and Prof. Lekha Nambiar were the respected judges.
